GAME SUMMARY

POLY PREP 6 - FIELDSTON 4

Tue. April 7th 4:30pm

Location: Fieldston

The Blue Devils made the trip up to Fieldston on Tuesday after this contest was initially rained out on Monday.  They faced a 1-1 Fieldston ballclub who was heard to be much improved from 2008.  As the temperature was around 45 degrees, every player was once again dressed warmly in Under Armor and a sweater.  When the teams hit the field Poly struck first.  Max Warner was able to break up a double play which allowed a run to score from third.  Junior Richie Carbone started on the mound for the Blue Devils.  After a rough start giving up two runs in the first two innings, Richie was able to settle down and pitch three more shutout innings.  The Blue Devils were able to tack on two more runs in the second inning along with a three run homerun over the left field wall by Richie Carbone in the third.  With a comfortable 6-2 lead, Poly let Fieldston back in the game 6-4 in the 7th inning.  After Senior Tom Laurendi came in to set up the win, Freshman Matt Caposio was able to shut the door hard on the Fieldston rally giving the Blue Devils a 6-4 league win.  Although it was not the prettiest win of the year, Poly walks out with a league triumph on the road which is never easy to accomplish.  The Blue Devils will face rival Xaverian on Saturday at St. Francis Field.  After splitting with Xaverian last season, Poly will look to improve on its 4-1 record and become the kings of Bay Ridge (because of last week’s defeat of Telecommunications).  Ace J.J. Franco will toe the mound for the Blue Devils.

POLY PREP 8 - FIELDSTON 2

Fri. May 2nd 2008 4:15pm

Location: Poly Prep

After a rainy night, Harlow Parker Field was very damp but Poly and Fieldston still got their league game under way on time.  The Fieldston Eagles were coming for Poly because the Eagles were in second place in the Ivy League behind Poly.  After a slow start the Blue Devils put runs on the board late to take an 8-2 win.  J.J. Franco pitched another great game and Joe Gilbride shut the door to give Poly its 11th league win.  After a nice win against a strong team, the Blue Devils will go back out of the league and face CHSAA contender Xavier Saturday morning at Harlow Parker Field, Kevin Heller will have the ball.

POLY PREP 9 - FIELDSTON 1

Mon. April 14th 2008 4:30pm

Location: Fieldston

After a great Bay Ridge rival win on Saturday, it was time to get back into league action.  This time the Blue Devils were facing 3-1 Fieldston, with first place in the league on the line.  With Poly being 4-0 in the league, this game was important for the Devils to push themselves away from the pack.  On the small Fieldston field in the Bronx, Poly hit 3 homeruns last year but this year the wood bats changed everything.  This time Poly used small ball to get the job done.  After scoring 4 in the first, the game was out of reach.  The Blue Devils took the game 9-1.  The Poly bats were hot once again, and continual great base running got the job done.  After giving up a leadoff triple (which was eventually the only run), Sam Hasty threw a solid 4 innings by allowing only that one run to score.  Richie Carbone threw 3 no-hit innings to finish the game.  The Blue Devils will look to continue their solid league play when they face Collegiate on Wednesday.  Collegiate is a young but talented team, and Poly always likes to bring their “A” game for a team that is a huge Poly Basketball rival.  Joe Gilbride will get the ball and will look to perform during his second start of the year.
